Guide to server migration

Server migration steps in a numbered bulletin format so it is easier to follow. A few things to consider. On the new server you will want to make sure that file and printer sharing is turned on, and password protected sharing is turned off. In addition, you will also want to make sure that the network profile is set to Home (Win7) or Private (Win10).

  1. Have everyone currently using ServiceDesk close it.

  2. Locate the sd folder on the server computer, (it is usually located on the C: drive).

  3. Rename the sd\NetData folder to something like sd\NetData_OLD (rename rejection indicates someone still has ServiceDesk open).

  4. Copy the whole sd folder and paste it onto the preferred drive of the new server (using a flash drive may help).

  5. Change the name of sd/NetData_OLD on the new server back to sd\NetData, but keep the name of sd\NetData_OLD on the old server.

  6. Download and install the SystemFilesInstaller onto the new server (located here Rossware Components.

  7. Share the sd folder and verify that the user group EVERYONE has Full Control (make a note of the shared path).

    To share a folder, Right click on the folder → Properties → click Sharing tab → click Advanced Sharing button → check Share this folder → click Permissions button → if “Everyone” is not in the Group or user’s names field click Add button → type “Everyone” into the Enter the object names to select field → click Check Names button → click ok → check allow full control → click OK button twice. Once back to the Sharing tab make note of the Network Path which will look something like \\ServerName\sd.

    Now click on the Security tab and verify that Everyone is allowed Full control. If “Everyone” is not in the Group or user names field click Add button → type “Everyone” into the Enter the object names to select field → click Check Names button → click ok → click allow for Full control → click ok.

  1. On the workstations, disconnect the existing mapped drive if no longer needed.

  2. Remap the new shared SD folder using the Network Path noted in step 7.

    To map a network drive open file explorer (looks like a folder icon) > right click on Computer (Win7) or This PC (Win10) > click Map Network Drive > make note of drive letter (usually will be Z:) > type in Network Path into the folder field \\ServerName\sd. Then click finish. If there are no discrepancies in the network settings, the drive should be mapped successfully now.

  3. Open up the sd folder and locate ServDesk.exe and create a shortcut onto the local desktop, Right click → Send To → Desktop (create shortcut). Please, do not just drag and drop the ServDesk.exe onto the desktop.

  4. Open ServiceDesk and press Ctrl+F1 to enter the ServiceDesk Settings window.

  5. In the top right there is a drop down labeled “Drive Designation for ServiceDesk”, there you will need to select the appropriate drive letter that is mapped to the sd folder. (Drive letter noted in step 9/footnote 2).

  6. Select which user will be using ServiceDesk on that workstation from the drop-down menu titled “Name of person using this station”.

  7. Next click on the blue button labeled “Change Folder for this Login’s Files”, then choose the middle option (A conventionally-named path).

  8. You will need to perform steps 8 through 14 on each workstation.
